She was naming and shaming.
A mother in the UK has ripped into a nurse for failing to mask her disgust after learning of her baby’s unusual name, as detailed in a TikTok video blowing up online.
Unfortunately, her sympathy plea divided viewers with some even claiming that her daughter had a “dog’s name.”
The mom, Luci, said she was in the hospital waiting room ahead of a blood test when a nurse approached her and started fawning over her baby girl.
“She was like ‘oh my god, look at her, she’s beautiful, how old is she?’” recounted the Brit.
However, the amicable encounter went south after the medic asked the baby’s name and Luci replied that she was called Monty.
Upon hearing her response, the nurse pulled a disgusted face and uttered “ugh,” recalled the parent, who felt like the medical practitioner’s bedside manner left something to be desired.
“I do understand that obviously Monty is like a bit of a different name, but would you not give a poker face?” spluttered the appalled momfluencer. “I just feel like if somebody told me their child’s name, like actually fully told me their name, I’d would just be like, ‘Oh, that’s beautiful. Lovely. What a different name!’”
She added, “She actually went ‘uh’ like she was disgusted by it.”
Luci said she was thankful that the killjoy clinician didn’t find out what her two other children were called.
“God forbid she ever found out I’ve got a daughter called Dusty and my son’s called Wallace!” said the TikTokker. “Can you imagine? Monty’s actually the most normal out of all of them, I think.”
Alas, her complaint rang hollow with a lot of viewers, who felt that her babies’ names were indeed bizarre.
“You’ve chosen an incredibly unusual name for a girl — you have to own the reaction,” critiqued one hater, while another wrote, “Did you not consider the child’s future?”
“Yes, I’ve made up their names just to trick you,” retorted Luci in the comments.
“I don’t get this reaction — you chose strange names to be ‘unique’ but you don’t like that people don’t love your strange names??” declared a third. “I’m sure you knew you would get this reaction.”
“Monty? A little girl?” scoffed one detractor, who claimed that Monty is a boy or “dog’s name.”
“Poor kid.”
However, others took Luci’s side with one defender writing, “Never heard Monty for a girl but wow how gorgeous. I love how different it is.”
Another wrote that what she chose to name her offspring was “none of anyone’s business.”
“I do like Dusty, like Dusty Springfield,” said a third, referencing the “Son Of A Preacher Man” singer.
Another argued that the nurse should’ve been polite regardless of their feelings on the tot’s title.
“Whether or not I like the names you have chosen for your children, I agree with you that people are rude and should mask their feelings,” said one.
Other commenters told similar stories of getting shamed over their baby’s name.
“We live in Scotland and my daughter is Aoife and I’ve had multiple people ask her name and then say “why,” lamented one. “It’s not even that unusual, it’s Gaelic.”
